While it is possible to block certain memories from one's consciousness, such forgetfulness comes at a cost. Other memories, perhaps lovely and precious memories, will be blocked along with the bad memories. Similarly, one can banish painful emotions such as grief and regret, but in the process become numb to joy and delight as well. The blocked memories and emotions remain within the subconscious (unconscious) mind, even when they are not easily available to the waking mind. They will continue to effect sleep and dreams, as well as daily moods and future relationships. Rather than trying to "forget" painful memories, one can face them directly with forgiveness, including self-forgiveness, understanding and acceptance. Professional therapy, as well as religious counsel, can be very helpful in this difficult process.
