Well to earn a horses respect you must be the 'herd' leader. You should be able to move your horses feet in any direction without a problem and get him to move just by body language. When the horse misbehaves or challenges you you must reprimand the horse within 3 seconds of the misbehaviour and use a fair type of punishment, like forcing him to move or hold still etc. Eventually the horse will come to respect you as herd leader and won't test you as often.

You gain respect by showing it to others and by behaving in ways that will gain you respect. Some of those ways are doing the right thing instead of taking the easy road, being a leader instead of a follower, being kind and polite to others even if they don't seem to be important people, and sticking to your moral decisions.

Kicking is a sign of disrespect, so what you need to do is gain your horses respect. Do alot of ground work, especially stuff like yeilding the horses hindquarters. Even after you have gained your horses respect, be very careful around this horse. When walking behind him, stay 5-6 feet behind him.
