Its quite easy! What you do first is go to My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2 then you need to create a folder inside your Sims 2 folder. Name it Downloads.
Next thing you need to do is install WinRAR or 7Zip, which is an archiver and decompressing software. Most Downloads (Custom Content as they are commonly called) is compressed for easier downloading and storage.
When your software is installed go to Download something (such at Mod the Sims), unzip to your Downloads. To do that open the downloadand select "Extract" and select the path (My Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2). Click OK.
