The normal way is through rescue inhalers, or if a severe allergic response (anaphylactic reaction), an injection of epinephrine.
However, in cases where you're either out of those, don't have them, or are in a place where they're not available, there are some old tricks that can stem an attack.
1. First, move them away from the irritant if you know what it is (most asthmatics do). After that, if it's possible, get the person's clothes off and wash them down with warm soap/water (don't use cold water on the chest as it'll just aggravate it) to get the irritant off their body (e.g., dust, pollen). Don't forget the hair.
If it's not possible, just wash/rinse their face off with water. Of course if it's a reaction to something they ate or drank, it won't matter.
2. Anything that will raise the body's metabolism and thin mucous are key. I always keep several Benadryl tablets or capsules around or with me; in a pinch, crush 2 or 3 (tablets) or open 2 or 3 capsules and mix in hot coffee, tea, or water to dissolve. The caffeine will speed up the metabolism, and the Benadryl will combat the histamine increase causing attack.
Benadryl is preferred, but if not available, any short acting antihistamine will do.
