Once you have received the Island Medallion, the fastest exit involves leaving the Mech behind.
First, exit out of the room where Zack and the Mayor are. Go all the way to the right until you see an opening. Once through, walk all the way to the right until you see a sign that says "NO PLANTS BEYOND THIS POINT". Keep going right and jump over the opening. At the far right is a chamber that extends all the way down past the "plant battle" scenes. Jump right and fall all the way down. Go left and you will see the exit to the Living Quarters scene. (This was where you entered after whacking the vines.)
If you find yourself in the "basement" or dead-end of the Storeroom, the exit is one floor up from there. Walk left, use the "elevator plant" to go up, then jump hard to the right to reach the exit.
