Its a very simple thing. all that you have to do is that you tell your dog to get off of the couch and when it does, give it a treat. tell it that it did a good job. if it won't get off the couch, tell it that it is being very bad and don't give it a treat.
you can either use squirt a water bottle in their face RIGHT when you catch them in the act, or for a while put something unpleasant feeling on the couch or chair so when they jump up, there isn't a nice soft couch there. People use sticky tape to keep cats off counters but that may not be so good for a couch. try something like tinfoil or some sort of metal sheet, nothing soft or comfy. if that still doesnt work, shock collars are VERY effective in any sort of obediance training. loud noises are too, like honking an airhorn at them whenever they jump up.
My Boxer had a real bad problem chewing my couch up when he was a puppy. I used to leave him in the house if I was going away for only minutes (ie. checking the mail, store). My husband and I noticed he would chew our couch up if he got bored or wasn't getting enough attention. We did buy him a load of chewing toys but that only solved some of the problem. We stopped leaving him inside if I physically wasn't in the house. If I had to leave anywhere he does have a tieout he goes on. However my dog just really needed more attention. Yes getting him more active like playing fetch worked out great and going on walks; but even more so I get him around other dogs so he can run himself crazy with them. I take him with me in the car if I'm going on a short drive to the store or walk him out with me if I'm checking the mail. My dog is family and he is so much more happy now.
You have to teach them not to. You can do this in many ways. One way is to find some sorta non-toxic, bad tasting spray to spray on the furniture. The dogs chews on the furniture, tastes the bad taste and instincts take over and say "This tastes bad: Do not chew.
You need to train them to stay off. Go to this site below for info on how to be a good pack leader.
you have to place foil on the couch, they dont like the noise the foil makes so they will stay off.
Spray the dog with a water bottle when it get on the couch eventually it will learn that you will spray it when it gets on the couch and decide not to do it.
An effective way to keep dogs off the furniture is to introduce some punishment when the act is done.
