Most people mount their flat screen TVs to the wall. But either way would work. It also depends on how much room you have on your walls depending on the size of your TV.
A wall TV which stays out of the way is probably the best choice for a kid's room. Children need a lot of room to spread out their stuff or even kick a ball around, so TV on the wall would be safer for both the TV and the child.
In case of a seismic event it would be safer to have your TV connected to a VESA mount and bolted to the studwork.
