Give me a party hat and I'll have a blast for the next half an hour (I'm 15, imaigne what it could do with 8 year olds?).
Use computers and technology as much as possible.
Give them blocks to just play dodgeball or whatever they want to (they'll hate you if you choose what they consider bad stuff). My class does dodgeball (the teachers bad so it doesn't work much, not to mention they put together a class full of the worst kids in the school), and we have a rivalry between grade 8 and 9 (it's a split class).
Don't make them copy notes, and do group projects, but let them have at least some choice in the groups.
Don't be uncool about if they do something wrong, be calm and don't give severe punishments. Strict teachers here get OK student behaviour, but then there is respected teachers. They can give unlimited notes and my class of kids that half of have gotten suspended this year and the rest at least detentions, will not say one complaint (but the whole philosiphy is that the teacher gives out notes very little too).
Don't be strict about iPods, let them use them. Don't be quick to accusse anyone of something either, they can get pissed off if they didn't do it.
