I believe you mean a cable modem, not a dial up modem...
The modem is connected to your internet Service Provider, ISP.
The ISP has your account, which means they assign a user ID and password to either you or your modem. The modem ID and PW are found on the info underneath it. Don't change that.
Or the USER NAME and Password were given to you with the paperwork you got when you signed up with the ISP for Internet access. At some point you may have to fill out that info. They may give you an IP address or Router number, and you will need that if they do.
Open System Prefs/Network
Name your location. (Home or Modem or something like that)
Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
Configure IPv4: Automatically
Click OK
Click Connect
If it doesn't work, click Assist Me, and follow the steps.
If you are at a hotel or conference center you get the information from the person in the office who is in control of Internet, usually the person who gives you your room key. Get the User ID and PW from them.
NO.
To connect to the internet you need to first buy an internet connection. You must then plug your internet cable into a modem. Finally you must have connection to the modem from your PC, most computers will automatically connect to the internet if the hardware is in place.
No ... you need a dial-up modem - something that the phone line can plug into.

Well I connected my to a modem, first plug your internet cable into the wall then into the modem, then get an ethernet cable (Comes with pro and elite console packages) and plug it into the modem and the back of the xbox.
If you have a internet telephone provider, you will have a special modem that your phone will plug into (instead of the wall jack) and you will just pick up the phone and dial.
If you want to have internet on that laptop you need to be connected to internet provider which usually happens directly (connected to the modem) or indirectly (connected to the modem through wired or wireless router).
If you have an ethernet cable plug it into the modem and they should be connected. My Modem is connected with a router to the rest of the network and with the internet modem and is both wireless and wired
Only if your computer has wifi
Connecting a Linksys Wireless Router to a modem will allow computer users to achieve a wireless Internet connection. Plug the blue Ethernet cable into the port labeled, "Ethernet", on the back of the modem. Plug the other end of the blue cable into the port labeled, "Internet", on the router. Plug a second Ethernet cable into the port labeled, "1", on the back of the router, and plug the other end into the back of the computer.
