You cannot prove something does not exist. You can only prove that things do exist. It is called the paradox of negative evidence.
However, one piece of evidence that mermaids cannot exist is that the last common ancestor of humans and modern fish lived nearly 400 million years ago, and traits that are identifiably human developed independently of any aquatic species. Thus it would be a contradiction of Biology for there to be something that is half human and half fish.

∙ 10y agoThere is no scientific evidence to suggest they are real. The original stories of creatures who were half woman half fish came from sailors who were out to sea for a very long time. What they actually saw were either manatees or dolphins.
Second, fish and the ancestors of humans a separated by several hundred million years of evolution, so a creature that is part human and part fish is biologically impossible.
