The three main characteristics of noob appearance are shape, skin and clothing. The first step should be to get a quality skin this need not be expensive and it is best to try out a demo before buying. There are free skins available but most of them have a noob look about them.
Once a good skin has been applied, the default shape can be changed, this is done by right clicking the avatar and selecting appearance, here can be found a number of sliders that will change all aspects on an avatars body, it takes time to achieve a good look but it is not difficult. Professionally designed shapes can also be purchased from stores inworld or on SL Marketplace.
New avatars come supplied with standard default clothing and backup clothing stored in the inventory library, it is worth accessing this library to find a combination of clothing that is not the default noob outfit. Designer clothing can be purchased and will look less noobish.
In addition a good animation greatly improves the overall impression given by an avatar.
