If you've seen the film "Saving Private Ryan" one might recall the scene in which the US Army Ranger Captain, played by actor Tom Hanks is conversing with a Sergeant, and the SGT asks Tom Hanks what he did as a civilian...the Captain (Hanks) replies that he was a school teacher. The Captain (Hanks) was a Reserve/Guard Army Officer activated (placed on active duty) for WWII. Consequently he was a Captain in the AUS. ALL US Army officers are reserve officers on active duty...UNLESS they hold a regular army commission; which are primarily held for West Point Graduates.
