By having safety measures in place such as having a carbon monoxide detector, not leaving appliances running with no open windows etc. This is especially important to not leave your car running in a closed garage since the fumes can build up.

When combusting an object it needs to be exposed to a plentiful supply of Oxygen to prevent the creation of Carbon Monoxide. Carbon Monoxide is created because there is not enough oxygen present for the Carbon to fully combust.

One good way to prevent accidental carbon monoxide poisoning is to avoid being exposed to breathing carbon monoxide (CO) in any significant concentration. The following list gives some suggestions on how to do that.

  • Do not run gas or diesel-powed motors in enclosed spaces.
  • When running gas-powered motors outdoors, keep the exhaust away from doors or windows and keep doors and windows closed.
  • If inside a motorboat compartment, keep the boat well ventilated.
  • Make routine checks of household heating exhaust systems.
  • Do not heat an enclosed space with an unvented fuel-burning salamander .
  • Install a CO detector near each sleeping area and on each level in a house.
  • Immediately go outside if the CO detector alarms -- CO is odorless and colorless and CO detectors do not alarm until dangerous levels are detected. Call the fire department to have the house checked for CO concentration before anyone returns inside.
