The elements that are different in appearance but similar in characteristics are ones that are in the same group, you have to look at boiling points, freezing points, electronegativity, bonding relations, how they react etc. like the 1st group, the alkali metals, they alll react violently with water, noble gases, group 18 rarely (only 4) form compounds halogens bond to make salts, hence the same halogen, u need a reference table too

You can't really prove it much, since it has been proven already, lol. You can show that elements can have similar properties even though it has different appearances. The elements that are different in appearance but similar in characteristics are ones that are in the same group, you have to look at boiling points, freezing points, electronegativity, bonding relations, how they react etc. like the 1st group, the alkali metals, they allll react violently with water, noble gases, group 18 rarely (only 4) form compounds halogens bond to make salts, hence the same halogen, u need a reference table too

every group, especially for the main group elements, give lots of insight as to the chemical properties of the elements within them. Elements are put into groups depending on how many valence electrons the element has. And since all elements with, lets say 2 valence electrons, all go into the same group, and since valence electrons greatly affect chemical properties, elements are grouped by their chemical properties/number of valence electrons.

the closer an element is to 0 or 8 valence electrons the more reactive it is.
