You won't be able to read in total darkness. You need some light to see the words, or use a screen that lights up. If you have a book, you'll need a flashlight or some other source of light.

Well, it depends on how dark it is. If it is pitch black, them no, but if your eyesight is good and there is a little bit of light then maybe. It is best for you to read when there is light, that will help you see better. If the tablet is glow in the dark, then maybe you could read it in pitch black darkness, but the tablet must glow very brightly.
I don't think either would be in the Dark Forest but you will have to read the books and find out.
