In my experience I had some money and went to the prosodontist (spelling), and it cost about $1000. He designed a plate, similar to a mouth guard, which I wear and at the beginning it didn't relieve the pain, but now it works quite well. I agree with the previous post, get a moldable mouthguard from the shops, it's probably as effective. (The ones you mold with hot water are good, I think they can be remolded over time?)
