How can you run a separate telephone line to the upstairs in an older home if it does not already have one?

You can either find a way to get a new line up there or run one on the outside of the house and drill through or they make a wireless telephone boxes that simply plug into any outlet.

if you do not need "dial up" or "dsl" capabilities for a computer modem, then a cordless phone or wireless jack converter is a good choice. i have found that modems get along better with hard-wired connections as a general rule. elsewise, installing a new wire run is pretty straight forward ... look things over carefully (twice!), pull in your new line, tie into the existing jack (color for color), wire the new jack in the same manner and enjoy the lowered leg work .

I have an older fax/telephone combination machine and I had to have two separate phone lines. It is best to have separate lines if you do a lot of faxing.
