North American masons are happy to advertise their membership by proudly displaying the emblem of the organization on pins, rings, car decals and so on. European members are more reticient about their memberships, perhaps because they do not wish to give the impression that they are looking for favours by virtue of their memberships, or perhaps because they fear social condemnation if their membership became known.
