I have Asthma myself and if I don't have a rescue inhaler or pills, I try my best to breathe slowly and deeply. If that doesn't work, I sip [not drink quicky] ice cold water. This my not be the best answer, but that's what I do and it turns out okay.

Will a hot shower help an asthma attack?

Yes, steam from a hot shower is an alternative medical method for relieving bronchospasm from an asthma attack. The steam will help the muscle and bronchospasm to relax, partially relieving the symptoms of the asthma attack. However, it must be noted that the priority treatment for an asthma attack is to administer the prescribed bronchodilator, usually by means of an inhaler. Common bronchodilators include salbutamol, terbutaline sulfate and adrenalin. If a patient presents with signs of an asthma attack, ask them to stop what they are doing, rest, and administer the prescribed medication. Be prepared to have medical assistance dispatched should the condition worsen. Reassuring the patient, as opposed to putting them in a hot shower, can often be more effective. Keeping the patient calm, free from stress and panic will lessen the need to breathe erratically making the patient feel less short of breath. Monitor the patient closely and administer a second dose of the medication if the condition does not improve within five minutes. Call for urgent medical backup if the patient can no longer speak due to lack of air, has gone unconscious or complains that the asthma attack is the worse they have ever had.

When you think about asthma treatments, consider both short-term and long-term. Short-term treatments will work to stop an attack that is happening or about to happen. Long-term treatment options are actions you can take that will decrease your chances of suffering from an asthma attack to begin with.Short acting bronchodilators will stop an asthma attack that is in progress. Some of these can be purchased over the counter, but the best advice is to talk to your doctor about having one. There are prescription bronchodilators available that offer different medications than over the counter ones do, and these might be more helpful. You also should not come to rely on a bronchodilator because if you do, it means your asthma is out of control and you need medical attention.Long-term Treatment OptionsIf you are a smoker and have asthma, you should make a concerted effort to stop. This alone will decrease the number and severity of asthma attacks you experience. There are medications available that have helped folks quit the cigarette habit, so talk to your doctor if you have tried other methods but have failed. You can also switch to electronic cigarettes which, while not meant to help you quit smoking, will deliver less tar and chemicals into your lungs. If you can do away with rugs in your house or apartment, go ahead and do so. Even the cleanest carpeting hosts allergens and dust mites that can aggravate asthma symptoms.Keep an asthma diary. This might seem time consuming, but the truth is many people don't realize all the asthma triggers they are encountering and that they can eliminate to make breathing easier. Having a diary of all your breathing difficulties, and also recording where and when they occurred, will go a long way towards helping you treat your asthma.
