First, I try to make them view words like ALREADY, EVER, NEVER, OFTEN and so on as a sort of huge stamps which read PRESENT PERFECT instead of PAR AVION, for instance. I want to make them use these words as triggers.
Then I try to explain the relation between the Past and the Present with the help of a mental image: I compare Time with a river and the speaker with a giant who has one foot on the left bank = the Past and the right one on the right bank = the Present.
