Dvd is different kind of storage disc even though it looks same as CD. Hence cd-rw cannot write dvd,while usually dvd-r or dvd-rw will be having facility to write on a cd.

Unless the CD or DVD tray has a method of keeping the disc against the drive unit, the disc won't be able to spin. In this case, the DVD/CD drive would not function properly.

Easy, just go to the disc and type "format". If you're talking about a CD/DVD then you normally format it thru the CD or DVD software.
you need a dvd compatible disc not a cd
A DVD is a movie disc. A CD is a music disc. Your DVD drive cant recognise cds because it is probably from an old computer. try downloading whatever is on the CD from the internet.
