When they start to develop into a grown chicken, roosters get larger combs and waffles (the red wobbly bits on their heads) than normal hens and they start to crow. They also behave differently than girls such as pecking or anything that shows the other chickens they're boss. if you have two roosters they often fight. Roosters also start to grow another claw or toe on the back of their leg that they use for fighting. If they are young though, it's hard to tell but some experts or farmers can tell by . . . well . . . looking at their . . .um . . . private bits.

There are four ways to sex a chick correctly1) By color. In some breeds, the male chick will be one color, while the female chick will be another.

2) By wing feathers. In some breeds (and crosses), when the chicks wing feathers start growing, the female chicks will have all short wing tip feathers, and they male chicks will have some short and some long.

3) Vent sexing. This should only be done by PROFESSIONALS ONLY, and is basically looking at a day old chicks genitalia which are visible from the vent by professionals.

4) Wait until the chick is old enough to visually sex. A chick, when old enough, will begin to display outward appearances that correspond to its sex (For males, the comb will get red/pink faster, may grow faster, and will begin to display pointy/shiny hackle and saddle feathers.)

There are many books you can purchase which can help you develop your chick-sexing skills.

HOWEVER, there are many "old time" or "wives tales" as to how to sex chicks. None of these are sure-fire, and many can hurt/maim the chicks.

A cock will be larger than a hen, and usually a different color. Their combs are much larger, and more red. Roosters crow, have larger tails, and pointy hackle/saddle feathers. Cocks are also more aggressive.

If it's the chicks 1st day of life, you can vent sex. Look in the chicks vent (butt hole) for a genital organ. It will resemble a small pimple. If you see one, that chick is a rooster.

You can also feather sex in the first 48 hours after hatching, if it's older, than this is not an option. On a female, The primary feathers are longer than the secondary feathers. On a male, The primary feathers and the secondary feathers are the same length. This is only possible to determine the sex of chicks produced from a cross of a male from a fast feathering breed and a female from a slow feathering breed. Don't attempt to use with pure breed chicks, as you will not get correct results.

If it's a day old, you can color sex. You can tell the gender from the chicks plumage. The plumage on day old females is usually white. The plumage on day old roosters are brown.

The tail feathers of a rooster tend to be longer and brighter than those of a hen. Along with the plume, these feathers tend to be the most outstanding feature on a rooster.
