you can tell if your pet mouse is dying because it will start breathing hard and twitch a lot. If they shiver, or their tale turns purple or any other color than pink. If they feel stiff or they aren't moving. Another way is if you pick it up and it feels lighter than it usually is or they feel stiff and their tale stays in 1 spot or hardly moves.

Sneezing, wheezing, loss of weight are signs of pneumonia.

Fur loss should also be checked out by a vet.

Any lumps could be abscesses and should be monitored and taken to a vet if they reach more than an inch across or are causing discomfort.

Any excess porphyrin, the red stuff that comes out their eyes and nose, can also be a sign of illness.

Domestic rats have weak lungs. If the cage hasn't been kept as clean as it should have, they can develope problems. Discharge from the nose, or heavy breathing usually mean pnumonia and you need to treat the rat with antibiotics. If you can't afford the vet, go to the pet store and get fish antibiotics. the pet store people should know the dosage. Hope this helps,
