There are technical definitions for mental illness, but in layman's terms, someone has "lost their mind" when the way they function does not correspond with the reality around them. There is a disconnect between their actions/reactions, and the people and circumstances involved. Often these people do not seem to know how to handle themselves, and something seems "off" quite often. Mental illness can be a temporary reaction to a set of stressors, or it can be pervasive throughout someone's life. It can also be said that crazy behavior is actually some inner attempt at balancing something out that is just not apparent to the rest of us. Keep in mind that we are ALL a bit neurotic in one area or another!
But to answer your question, check and see if this person is Freddy Dorris. If this person is indeed Fred, he has lost his mind. Otherwise you are probably safe.
