In many cases male and female pterosaurs of the same species have been assigned to separate species by mistake because of their differences. In pterosaurs with headcrests that were used for display, paleontologists can sometimes tell the difference between males and females because males will have larger, more ornate headcrests than females. In some species, such as Pteranodon, the females were smaller than the males. Also in Pteranodon, the females have a much wider pelvis than males, which allows them to lay eggs.
