Some people think that Maine Coons can be identified by the "M" on their foreheads. Actually, the "M" is present in almost every cat with tabby markings and many Maine Coons are tabbies. Solid color, bi-color and tortoiseshell Maine Coons without tabby markings will not have the "M". So this is not a good answer as to how distinguish between a Maine Coon and a Ragamuffin.

Ragdoll's are larger, yes, and Ragdoll's also go limp when you hold them (hence their name). Birmans are more vocal.

What kind of cat is Argus Filch's cat?

Filch's cat is a Maine Coon. You can tell because of the M on Mrs. Norris's forehead, which is a feature that all Maine Coons have.

What breed of cat is the most sociable?

In my personal experience in the feline world, as a shelter volunteer and cat lover, my overall favorite cat breed must be the Maine Coon, these cats are fairly large and are often times called "The Gentle Giant" of cats. I own a Maine Coon and I can tell you from experience that they are fantastic animals to live with, if you go with a trusted breeder I am sure you will be pleased with them.

How do you get stray cats to have kittens in your yard?

I can tell you of how my aunt got a stray cat to have kittens in her yard. There was a beautiful stray Maine coon that was always prancing in her yard. Obsessed about the cat, my aunt put out some cat food for a week in the hope that she could tame her. The cat came around more often. She then placed the food closer to her house and started to interact with the cat. The Maine coon got so comfortable with her that she was able to take food from her hand. Soon my aunt set up a little house filled with soft pillows for the cat and left the food beside that instead. The Maine coon started sleeping in the little house. Before you know it the Maine coon had made the little house into a den for her baby kittens. Cats won't have kittens in a place where they aren't comfortable, so try to make them fell at home. Good luck!

How do you tell what a mixed breed cat is?

Look online, read books about different breeds, ask a professional for help. If you got your cat from a breeder, go back and ask what the parents were, they should know. Pedigree cats and kittens that are sold come with papers which say the breed of the cat the new owners are purchasing. If you do not have papers, then the bloodline of the cat cannot be confirmed and is classed as a Domestic Shorthair or Longhair. Some breeds of cats have special markings, so for example if you have a Maine Coon (a large breed of cat) then look for a mark above the forehead looks like a "M". However, all cats with the tabby colouring have an "M" on the forehead. A good resource is TICA (The International Cat Association.) They have pictures of all of their recognized breeds, which you can compare your cat to (see below in Related Links) If your cat is just a "regular" housecat, what you have is called a "Domestic Shorthair." (Breed names for local feline stock varies from country to country.) If so, you do have a "real" breed of cat - owners from other countries will keep American Domestic Shorthairs as pets, because they are widely believed to be friendly and hardy.

How much food should you feed a Maine coon cat?

I have a main coon and I keep her dish full all day. They like fresh food best so give them a little bit at a time and check the dish occasionally. The only way to really tell how much food to feed is to measure out the food, and weigh your cat once a week. Using digital scales will do. If the cat's weight starts to increase or decrease, alter the amount of food you are giving accordingly. The easiest way to do this is to give the cat set meals as opposed to leaving a bowl out all day.
