If it has 6 spark plugs, there is a 91% chance it is a 3.3 liter engine, 9% chance it is a 3.8 liter. Both have 2 bbl carbs. If it has 8 spark plugs there is a 99% chance it is a 305 2 bbl, 1% chance it is a 350 4 bbl.
I'm sure if you bring it to your local autoshop they'll tell you.
You can tell if the transmission, in your 1998 Chevy Malibu, is going bad. If there is a whining or clunking noise. The transmission might cause your engine to install when you are stopped with your foot on the brake.

you wont get fuel to engine,might just be fuse or relay.
it senses the engine temperature and sends a signal to turn on the radiater cooling fans, and it also sends info to guage in car to tell temp, of engine.
more than likely it will slip or not shift right.

should be on a sticker on the underside of the hood or somewhere around the engine bay, if there is none, you can tell because if its not a big block (460) its probably a 351M
351, you have to look for a letter stamped somewhere on a visible part of the engine. If it's a stock engine, the door sticker should tell you. It's either W, M, or C.
