The first operational MP40 prototype was created by Erma Werke firearms LTD in 1938, though the gun wasn't introduced to the Wehrmacht until the following year, during the invasion of Poland in September of '39.

Most were actually made in Dachau, Germany by a company called ERMA. Then imported for Iver Johnson. Look in front of the lever, If its an ERMA there should be 3 small stamps,(End one will have the year it was made. IE... Mine has 84..=1984),1 circular 1 with the word ERMA in it. These are getting pretty rare to find anymore. I'm not for sure how many were made. I have one thats about 90%-95%. It has a low 600 SN.
On the receiver near the owl stamping there should be a shield with a year in it. For example '85'. Supposedly these carbines were only imported under the Iver Johnson brand name in 1985 and 1986. All others were Erma EM-1's. Erma manufactured both. Look for the stylized Erma on the forward left side of the receiver.
You have to tell us who made it.
You K98 was made by waffen werke (arms factory) in Brunn Bystrica. The 'dou' is the firearm code for that company. '43' stand for 1943, year it was made...................
Usually by the serial number.
