The most serious problem that a 15 year old Northstar would suffer from is a bad headgasket. There is a relatively easy procedure to test for the presence of exhaust gases in the coolant. Most larger auto parts stores have the kit to do this. It is the only FOOLPROOF way to test for a bad HG, other than a cylinder pressure test. Northstars, despite their (unearned) bad reputation in some circles, are quite well designed.
