How can you tell your feet are swollen?

Swollen feet are the result of the foot muscles collecting extra fluids.

This can happen from any number of reasons: trauma, long exercise sessions, or simply from being on your feet for too long. Even extended sitting can cause fluid build up in the legs and feet.

While this can happen at any age (especially if there is trauma involved), it becomes increasingly common the older you get. Even by middle age many people suffer swollen feet and legs just from their daily routines.

You may need to narrow down the cause before considering a treatment response and should consult a doctor if there is pain along with the swelling.

If it is just excess water, it will typically be released the next time you lay down (which is a leading cause of increased urination interrupting sleep the older a person becomes)

Side Note: Do not let that discourage you from drinking water near bed time; the fluid build up was from throughout the day and your body will still need fresh water to purge itself during the night. The three most important times to drink water are before bed, after waking up and twenty minutes before meals.
