Nassau, Suffolk, Queens
Nassau County is on Long Island. Long Island is divided into four counties. Two of them -- Kings and Queens Counties -- are also boroughs of New York City (Brooklyn and Queens, respectively). The other two -- Nassau and Suffolk Counties -- are part of New York State, but not part of New York City. Brooklyn and Queens (Kings and Queens Counties) are on the western end of Long Island, and Suffolk County takes up the entire eastern half (it is by far the largest of the four counties). Nassau County is sandwiched between Brooklyn and Queens and Suffolk County.
No, Valley Stream is not in any of the five boroughs. Valley Stream is a village in Nassau County, on Long Island, New York. However, Nassau County borders the New York City borough/county of Queens on its east side, and Valley Stream is located right next to the Queens/Nassau border. So Valley Stream is almost in Queens, but not quite.
Geographically speaking, yes. The actual geographic landmass that is Long Island consists of Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties. Brooklyn and Queens, though, are also boroughs in New York City, which leads many people to think of "Long Island" as being just Nassau and Suffolk. If you say you're going to "Long Island", people generally assume you mean Nassau or Suffolk because Brooklyn and Queens are part of "the city". It's a little confusing if you're not from the area. Hope this helps.
Yes. Brooklyn and Queens are part of Long Island, at the western edge of it. Queens is directly above Brooklyn. If you continue north in Brooklyn, you'll end up in Queens, and if you continue heading east from Queens/Brooklyn, you will end up on the rest of Long Island (Nassau & Suffolk Counties).
No. The five boroughs of New York City are Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island. Each borough is also a county: Manhattan is New York County, Brooklyn is Kings County, Queens is Queens County, The Bronx is Bronx County and Staten Island is Richmond County. Brooklyn and Queens -- Kings and Queens Counties -- are on Long Island, along with Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Nassau County and Suffolk County are part of New York State, but not part of New York City. Long Island is not only New York State's largest island, but the continental United States's largest island.

Near is a relative term. East Rockaway, New York, is in Nassau County, although it is frequently confused with Far Rockaway, which is in Queens County. East Rockaway is too far from Brooklyn to walk, but you can travel between the two by car, crossing from Nassau County to Queens County to Kings County (i.e. Brooklyn) in less than an hour.
