Firstly, the Pit Bull is not actually a breed, but the term is used to refer to breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and sometimes the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Assuming by ''Pit Bull'' you mean the American Pit Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier, the difference is that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a few inches shorter, weighs less and was first bred in England. ''Pit Bull'' type dogs are unfortunately illegal in many countries, such as the UK, with the exception of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier; which is still legal.

i have one of each and as with any breed they all have things that stand out. With my two my pit is tall but stocky in the shoulders with a very square head and my staf is shorter and extremely stocky from head to toe. His head is also a little more pointed.

A Staffordshire Bull Terrier is short, muscular and compact, but not fat. They have shorter muzzles (NOT pug-face), and jaws that make their head look much larger and square. They are not large; around 14inches, and are at the most 32lbs.

The American Staffordshire Terrier is 65-75lbs, and 17-19inches. They are all together heavier, and their muscles are well defined. An excellent example is Westminster Kennel Club videos, both of the SBT and the AST. They are not 'American Bullies'.

The American Pit Bull terrier is smaller, lighter and a bit more agile. They usually have more drive than a AST, but this is not always the case. APBT are 40-55lbs, 18-21 inches and they should not be as thick. They have more tuck up (waist). They have fairly large heads, but they have a overall different ''look'' then a AST.

You should not be able to confuse SBT with AST, or SBT with APBT.

APBT and AST can be confused, but check out Storytime Kennel for AST, and Caragan Kennel for APBT pics.

The American Staffordshire Terrier, The American Pit Bull Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. All three of these "breeds" originated from the same group of British dogs, but have been bred along different lines and for different purposes long enough now to be separate breeds.

The American Staffordshire Terrier, are generally of larger bone structure, head size and weight then their cousins the American Pit Bull Terrier. And the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are usually shorter and smaller than both the other breeds.

Your question cannot be answered... because Pitbull isn't a breed. Here are the breeds sometimes mistakenly called a Pit Bull.

- American Pit Bull Terrier

- American Bully

- American Staffordshire Terrier

- Staffordshire Bull Terrier

- American Bull Terrier

- English Bulldog

- American Bulldog

- Cane Corso

- Bullmastiff

- Presa Canario

- Dogo Argentino

- Boxer

- Rottweiler

- Boerboel

So by some standards, an AmStaff puppy would be considered a pit bull.

The only real, recogniseable difference between these two breeds is the size. American Staffordshire Terriers are a few inches taller at the shoulder than Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Also, American Staffordshire Terriers are illegal in the UK.

These breeds are practically identical in appearance and are especially hard to tell apart as puppies. A sure way to tell if puppies are American Pit Bull Terriers or American Staffordshire Terriers is to see if they are Kennel Club registered and have pedigree papers. Only American Staffordshire Terriers are Kennel Club recognised and so only puppies of this breed can be registered. Both of these breeds can make wonderful pets providing you socialize and train them.

To most people the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Pit Bull Terrier are pretty much indistinguishable from one another. However, the two are recognized as separate breeds throughout most of the World. In countries where Breed Specific Legislation is in force, such as the UK, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are completely legal whereas unfortunately Pit Bulls are not. Therefore it can be quite useful to be able to distinguish between the two breeds.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are an English breed, standing at between 14 and 16 inches in height, with a stocky and muscular body. American Pit Bull Terriers are hard to generalize due to the variation within the breed, but are almost always taller, leaner and more athletic than show-standard Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

Therefore the main difference between the two breeds are that Pit Bulls are usually larger, even though this is not always the case! Staffordshire Bull Terriers are bred to a specific Kennel Club breed standard, whereas in many countries Pit Bulls are considered more of a "type" of Dog than a breed. There is a version of the Pit Bull that is bred to standard, the American Staffordshire Terrier; a breed which expresses very similar characteristics to the Pit Bull and may be described as an enlarged version of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

To sum up, the only REAL difference between Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Pit Bull Terriers is that Staffords are smaller and often bred to a breed standard. The similarities between the breeds cause great confusion, and Staffords often pass as Pit Bulls and vice versa.
