1. Use a small balance scale ( like the one at the post office or the hardware store by the grass seed.)

2. Use a yardstick, balance it in the middle, then to weigh one pound of gold, put a 1 pound (known)weight on one end, add gold to the other side until the sides are level.

Then you have measured out exactly one pound of gold!

The problem with weighing a pound of gold on common scales is that, if you wish to weigh it in ounces, you have to weight it in Troy ounces not Avoirdupois ounces. An Avoirdupois ounce (used for meat, butter, or non-precious metals) contains 28.349 g each, while a Troy ounce (used for precious metals) is 31.103 g. To make things more confusing there are 12 ounces in a Troy pound and 16 ounces in Avoirdupois pound. If using a scale (either a balance or a spring scale) it is better to measure in grams.
