Most would assume a regimented, extreme level of prayer would constitute a life of prayer. This would exclude a 'regular' person from a life of prayer though and contact with the divine should not be exclusive. A life of prayer can be achieved by turning your mind to the divine when it is usually occupied with pointless mundane matters. Prayer can be on a bus, a plane, while walking at any point when the mind is not being fully utilised. The prayer need not be even words, just the attempt to commune or conceive of the divine.
