What did early settlements have
In my opinion, I think their geography helped them thrive on crops and their neighbouring Indians. I don't think that geography has the same impact on our economy today, because we have technology, and a lot of things we can benefit from, that they did not have.
The mountains and deserts in western and southwestern China slowed the exchange of ideas.

China's geography has significantly influenced its development by both facilitating and hindering various aspects of its growth. The vast mountains and deserts, such as the Himalayas and the Gobi, isolated China from much of the outside world, limiting cultural exchange and trade in its early history. Conversely, the fertile river valleys, particularly those of the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers, fostered agricultural development and population growth. This combination of isolation and agricultural richness shaped China's unique civilization while also restricting its interaction with neighboring cultures for centuries.
