Heat expands, cold contracts... When you weld, the 2 metals will expand toward each other. once your done, they will try to pull apart. not enough filler rod, not clamping, rapid cooling, undercut, wrong filler rod, are just a few causes of cracks

How do expansion joints in a sidewalk keep the concrete from cracking?

The expansion joint in a sidewalk keeps the concrete from cracking just as what its called. It allows the concrete to expand when heated and contract when cold. Without the joint, the concrete will crack and become uneven or mountain up.

What is the disadvantage of without preheating in welding?

Preheating can assist the welding penetration on materials with high thermal conductivity such as thick aluminum sections or even some steels. This reduces the heat sink affect (rapid cooling) of the deposited weld by the surrounding cold metal. Preheating also significantly reduces the rapid cooldown of the item post welding. Contrary to many beliefs, it is difficult if not impossible to overheat metals but many metals (such as carbon steels) can become brittle if cooled rapidly. They can also lock in post weld stresses that can compromise the engineering qualities expected. Preheating builds up heat in the metal and it takes longer for it to cool. In affect, preheating is also a portion of the postheating formula. In most welding code applications, carbon steels and some other metals require preheating prior to welding to be in compliance.

What would happen if you freeze a jawbreaker?

It will get cold, if you leave it cold for long enough drop it into warm water and it will cause it to start cracking making it so you can take little pieces off.

Is it good to be constantly cracking your knuckles?

Most people say cracking knuckles leads to arthritis. It doesn't! I wouldn't recommend cracking your fingers all the time, and I personally don't like cracking fingers in the cold. You can, if you want to, but it hurts. I think the weather of the cold air affects the finger joints which make them stiff and harder to crack. Cracking your fingers also open your joint air holes, so you'll be okay. Cracking fingers are mostly fine to do!!

What is the welding defects for MIG welding?

You can find pretty much all welding defects in Mig welding. There are some that are morelikely to appear than others but that is depending on the gas and power range that is being applied. The defects are: porosity, incomplete penetration (mostly in case of short circuit transfer) undercut, excessive concavity/convexity (incorrect amperage/voltage ratio), cracks (cold and hot) incomplete fusion (wrong torch angles), cold lap.
