Both ways of receiving the Eucharist are acceptable for Catholics. It is up to the individual Catholic to choose. Receiving the Eucharist directly into the mouth is the more traditional way whereas in the hands is newer. The real question comes down to whether or not the Catholic is comfortable in touching the Eucharist or feels that by taking the Eucharist by hand they would prevent the spread of diseases. Traditional Catholics argue that disease in any form is impossible to spread via the holy bread. However, to increase the popularity of receiving the Eucharist, it was determined that to allow communion to be administered by hand is acceptable. This is as long as the Catholic has properly cleaned their hands and forms a hand-over-hand cup-like throne to place the body of Christ upon. Another reason cited is that by receiving communion by hand decreases the chance the host would be accidentally dropped. A third way which you might see rarely is when the Eucharistic minister dips the host in the precious blood and then places it directly in the mouth. This is called by 'intinction'. This is actually dates to pre-Vatican II as a means to receive both the body and blood of Christ together.

How do you share the Eucharist with others?

As a sacrament in the Catholic Church, sharing the Eucharist involves receiving consecrated bread and wine during Mass from a priest or Eucharistic minister. It is seen as a symbol of unity and communion with Christ and fellow believers. Non-Catholics are generally not permitted to receive the Eucharist in the Catholic Church.

To hear the Word of God, worship with others, and receive the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist.

Why shouldn't a non-Catholic receive Eucharist?

Roman Catholic AnswerNo. This is very dangerous. St. Paul warns that because people do not recognize the Body and Blood of the Lord many of them are sick and dying. Unless a person fully recognizes the Body and Blood of the Lord, and their own sinfulness is confessed and forgiven they are asking for trouble. The Church makes provisions for those who are in danger of dying and don't have time to go through the classes and whatnot to speak to a priest. In danger of death, one might speak to a priest and be allowed confession and the Eucharist if one is baptised and truly believes in the Eucharist. Failing that, one must go through classes and confession (the Sacrament of Penance) or be baptised first. Even Catholics are risking a lot when they are taking Holy Communion unworthily.

Why do you need to attend the Holy Eucharist?

When one takes or recieves communioin, one shares in the body and blood of Christ, thus recommitting oneself to Christ. Only those who belong to Christ through the sacrament of baptism are legible for this act. This is because beforer one is baptized, one does not belong to the body of Christ the Church and thus is not in communion with the Church. If one is not in communion with the Church one is not in communion with Christ as the Church is one, consecrated to Christ and is the body of Christ. being in communion means being a member of the Church, sharing in the unity of the body of Christ comprised of the living and the faithful departed. It is not because of any worthiness that one recieves communion because no one is worthy so to do, but it is by God's grace that we are purified and healed of our iniquities and thus able to share in the Sacred Mysteries of the Body and Blood of Christ. By recieving communion one explicitly communicates one's acceptance of Christ as Lord and King of all creation. not only that, but one also outwardly communicates one's identity, 'I belong to Christ, and to his Holy Church and so I share in His Body in the Eucharist together with my brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ the Church.

Can you share God's grace with others?

Roman Catholic AnswerIn a manner of speaking, grace makes you a better person, and if you are living a grace filled life, then you are naturally going to be sharing with others. But directly, you may be a cause of helping others to come to grace, but they can only directly receive it from God.

Did Jesus give 7 or more sacraments?

Jesus directly instituted two sacraments, Baptism and the Lord's Supper (or Holy Communion, commonly called the Eucharist or the Mass); five others, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Reconciliation (confession and absolution), Ordination and Anointing of the Sick, are commonly called sacraments, but were not directly instituted by him.

Another name for eucharist?

Communion, Mass, Lord's Supper and probably many others.

Why do Church of England churches let Catholics take communion?

The Church of England allows Catholics, and I presume others, to receive communion out of a "spirit of Ecumenism." Whilst they allow this, a Catholic should not partake of communion with any "church" which is not in communion with Rome; as to do so, is an explicit consent to the believes and teachings of said "church." Please see the link below for a full explanation as to why it is wrong for Catholics to receive communion in a Church not in communion with Rome.
