I'm not sure what you mean by shadow chao. there are 3 types:
1) a dark chao
2) a dark running type chao
3) a shadow the hedgehog chao
for 1, treat your chao nicely with bad guys until it is dark colored, then, let it evolve or 'chaovolve' as I call it.
for 2) treat your chao nicely with bad guys until it is dark colored, then, let it evolve, then feed a strict diet of Green chaos drives.
for 3) err... I heard you must use a cheat system.

No no, its easy to get a shadow the hedgehog chao, all you have to do is make a dark running/running chao and by th second evolution it will look like shadow but it doesnt after the first one.
It is also possible to get a Red Two-Tone (Breed a Red Mono-Tone Chao with a Normal Colored Chao) and evolve it into a Dark/Run.
