Old pennies are copper. Newer ones are mostly tin with a few other metals and copper plating on the outside.
I don't know when they started changing it but I'm sure you could find out on the net with a little searching.

In 1896 a penny was worth a penny. If you have a penny dated 1896 then it is worth more than that.
