Celtic New Year occurred on Oct 31. It's believed that all who died were earthbound until Saween (New Year's Eve) upon which time all migrated into the beyond. Community bonfires were set and villagers gathered there to wait until midnight passed and the mass migration of souls passed. They'd let the fires in their homes burn out and they'd place food on the doorstep to placate travelling souls in the hope they'd continue journeying and not enter their homes and harm anything. After midnight, each family took coals from the bonfire home to rekindle their hearth. It was a community event as well as a spiritual "ritual" that was celebrated as well as feared. Trick or treat as well as Halloween is celebrated only where there was English influence. The Christian Church tried to replace this pagan celebration by declaring Nov 1st as All Saints Day and the evening before as sacred or Hallowed... thus Halloween. The church wasn't successful with displacing the tradition, hence trick or treaters dressed as ghosts go from door to door for candy. If they get none, a prank is expected.
