What would cause a John Deere snow blower to not go forwards or backwards even though the engine is still running?

1: Check that the pin at the back is pushed in (the pin which allows you to put the transmission into "neutral" so you can move it without using the engine). It's right at the back, near the lower right.
2: Check the drive belt; this goes from the bottom of the engine right to the rear axle. If it's too loose, you'll get no movement (and a burning rubber smell, most likely!)

∙ 11y agoMake sure your parking brake is disengaged. Also, check the rear of the tractor and make sure the freewheeling lever (small lever sticking out of transmission) is pushed in; this way, the tractor can not move when its not running. If neither of those work, look under the tractor and check to see if the transmission drive belt is hooked up.
