hard to say because it is not always stated on the packaging if it has been genetically modified.

Answer:60 to 70% of food in grocery stores are genetically modified. You don't know for sure, but most of what you eat has been genetically modified (unless you eat only organic foods, or something).

There are dozens of companies around the world that are involved in genetically modifying foods. In the United States and the world, Monsanto is the company that leads in genetically engineering foods.

Most, if not all, big name food companies (General Mills, Kellogg's, Pepsi, Coke, and Kraft are a few) use GMO ingredients in their products.

At least 9 foods are genetically modified. Foods that are known to have been genetically modified are tomatoes, potatoes, field corn, sweet corn, soy, canola, crookneck squash, papayas, and rice. There may be others and more and more foods are being genetically modified as time passes.

Biotech companies that genetically modify foods by taking a gene from one species and inserting it into the DNA of another species, which is why genetic engineering refers to are:

  • Bayer
  • Syngenta
  • Dow AgroSciences (Dow Chemical)
  • Monsanto
  • GB BioSciences (Syngenta)
  • IP Genetics
  • Pioneer Hi-Bred International
  • many others - see http://www.biofortified.org/resources/genetic-engineering-companies/

Companies that use GMO ingredients in their foods are every major food company in the United States, including Kelloggs, PepsiCo, Lays, Coca-Cola, General Mills, Dean Foods...

GMO food is very common in the United States. At least 70% (probably more) of the corn and soybeans grown are GMO. 70% or more of the processed foods in grocery stores contain GMO ingredients. More GMO foods are being developed.

i believe that there have been at least 200 modified foods

How many food companies use genetically modified organisms in their products?

Nearly every company uses "genetically modified organisms" in their products, because nearly everything we raise for food today has been bred so that it's quite different from its wild ancestors ... its genetics have been modified.

How many people died from genetically modified foods?

alot about 200 a year (i don't really know)

Where are genetically modified organisms currently in use?

They are grown all across the USA and Canada and in many other parts of the world. At least 70% of processed foods in the grocery stores in the U.S. have GMO ingredients. Much of the meat in the U.S. has been grown using hormones that are genetically modified. Dairy cows are often given genetically modified hormones in the U.S. Some pharmaceutical drugs are made using genetic modification.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GM FOODS?

Some of the GM, or genetically modified, foods include crops, meats, and dairy. Cows are normally fed a GM diet to enhance the meat or dairy and many of the time the fertilzer in crops such as corn and tomatoes are genetically modified as well.

During the pas decade have the US been eating many genetic modified foods?

Probably. Because genetically modified foods (GMO) are not required to be labeled as such, it is difficult to know for certain. But it is very likely that food staples produced by huge corporations such as Monsanto or Cargil are genetically modified. I suspect most of the corn, soybeans and wheat produced in the U.S. are GMO.

What are the laws regarding labelling genetically modified foods?

In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency takes the lead for regulation of genetically modified foods, with help from the Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, and many different universities.

Why are people so concerned about genetically modified food?

People are concerned about this because genetically modified food is not natural food. It was genetically modified by a human or a machine. In either case, man made machine, and man isn't perfect. So, because of that, people are so concerned.

What are the advantages of GMO plants?

enetically modified foods or biotech foods are foods derived from genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise[1] than mutagenesis (mutation breeding) where an organism is exposed to radiation or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. Other techniques by which humans modify food organisms include selective breeding; plant breeding, and animal breeding, and somaclonal variation. Since genetically modified food has been introduced into supermarkets, there has been much controversy as to whether it is actually safe.

What is the price of genetically modified food?

The cost of GMO foods purchased in grocery stores is not known because what foods are GMO are which are not are not labeled. There are also many factors that affect food prices, so it is difficult to know how GMO ingredients in foods affects price.

Which is an ethical issue surrounding the use of genetically modified foods?

There are many, but one is the fact that companies are allowed to get patents on GMO varieties, something that has been desired by conventional plant breeders, but has always been denied. Many believe granting patents for living organisms is not only unethical, but can have far-reaching negative consequences.

What are people doing to stop genetic engineering?

Many action groups are campaigning to stop genetic engineering. In many countries, genetically engineered foods are widespread and consumers have no way of knowing that they're eating GMOs (genetically modified foods). The USA is one of those countries. The institute of Responsible Technology is working hard to change things.
