It's likely that the surname Naples came from a name like Niccoli da Naples, where a peasant whithout a surname would simply be reffered to as 'da (place of birth)', similar to the Italian Leonardo da vinci (Leonard of/from Vinci), and the 'da' was simply dropped over time.
