Many Taoists are strictly vegetarian in order to keep in line with the Tao, but a good number of Taoists are not vegetarian and this is not seen as an infraction of Taoist values. Taoists aren't vegetarians. They are frugal meats, but don't abolish them. They do, however, incorporate increased amounts of fruits, veggies, seeds and nuts in their diet. Anyway, they follow such an organized diet regime because taoists regard the diet as extremely important to their physical, mental, and spiritual being. Taoists also believe that different foods have different amounts of chi in them. Basically they follow their diet to maintain and regulate balance.
The Taoists are given credit for creating Tai Chi Chuan which is an internal martial arts style. The Taoists use martial arts in a very similar way to the Buddhists of Shaolin Temple. That is that the Taoists use the martial arts as a form of moving meditation, a method for cultivating chi, a way to keep their bodies in good physical condition, and they generally practice Tai Chi Chuan in order to teach themselves how to live and move more in harmony with Tao.
People who follow the religion of Taoism are called Taoists. They strive to live in harmony with the Tao, which is the source and principle of everything in the universe. Taoists seek to cultivate balance, inner peace, and harmony with nature through practices such as meditation, qi gong, and following the teachings of ancient Taoist sages.
