Many studies have been done regarding exactly how animals develop camouflage, pertaining to evolution. In one study, researchers studied a group of mice with coats varying from white to dark gray. When the rocks of their habitat were lighter, the white mice survived to pass on their genes because they were able to avoid predators--mostly hawks--that could not see them against the light rocks. After several generations, the mouse population was mostly white in color. Other examples abound, but the point is that animals develop camouflage dependent on the habitat in which they live. The camouflage allows them to avoid predators, living long enough to reproduce.
