There are a few things you can do to help heal sore muscles.

  • You can take a cold bath or shower. This reduces the swelling in the muscles. Some say you should also follow up the cold water with warm to increase blood circulation after reducing the swelling.
  • An alternative to immersing your whole body in cold water is to hold an ice pack to the muscle. Since the soreness is from lunges, I'm assuming it's in your thigh muscles, so you could wrap an ice pack around them.
  • Massage the muscle gently and in circular motions. This will ease the pain and also reduce swelling.
  • Stretch. Although it may be a little painful to do this, do it gently and slowly to reduce stiffness and cramping. I have left leg muscles unstretched before and it only caused more hurt later, when I couldn't extend them very much.
  • Drink plenty of water.
