It matters which valve is leaking, how much is leaking and the cause of the leak. It can be fatal but could be repaired depending on the condition of the valve and the particular valve affected. It is not wise the let the child to get overexerted and it is best to have a cardiologist determine all the variables involved with that particular child.

What results when a valve is leaking blood back into the heart?

Regurgitation. Some of the blood flows back to the heart when it should be going the other way.

Who needs an artificial heart valve?

An artificial heart valve is needed if your natural valve is leaking beyond a point that is causing the chambers (ventricles) to enlarge thus reducing blood flow through the lungs and creating increased pulmonary pressure. With a new valve the back pressure is eliminated and the heart becomes a much more effective pump.

What does it mean when blood flows backwards in heart?

It could mean that you have Pulmonary Arterial Hypetension.

For what reasons may an aortic valve replacement surgery be needed?

Aortic valve replacement surgery will be required if the valve in the heart is either too narrow for all of the blood to pass through or if the valve is leaking. This valve is very important as it prevents blood from rushing back into the heart after it has been pumped out.

What is a leaky heart valve?

A leaky valve is a condition in which the blood flow is altered by a valve that allows blood to flow backwards, otherwise known as "regurgitation".Regurgitation can negatively impact the flow of blood across each of your four heart valves - aortic valve, pulmonary valve, mitral valve and tricuspid valve.Ultimately, leaky heart valves force the heart to "work harder" as it re-pumps blood through a valve. Over time, this can lead to several leaking heart valve symptoms and an enlarged heart. Some of the most common symptoms of leaky heart valves are:Shortness of breath, especially with exertion or when you lie downFatigue, especially during times of increased activityCough, especially at night or when lying downHeart palpitations - sensations of a rapid, fluttering heartbeatSwollen feet or anklesHeart murmurExcessive urinationChest pain (angina) or tightnessFeeling faint or fainting with exertionDizzinessLeaking heart valve symptoms do not always appear, or manifest, simultaneously for a patient. Many patients can be asymptomatic even though they suffer from mild, moderate, or even severe, heart valve disease. If you are experiencing symptoms, it's important to know that there are a number of different heart valve diseases and valve defects that could trigger leaky heart valve symptoms. It is recommended that those who believe they are experiencing any of the leaking heart valve symptoms identified above visit their doctor or cardiologist. Some heart valve diseases can be easily identified by listening to your heart valve sounds with a stethoscope. This is usually the first step in diagnosing a heart valve disease or leak in the valve.

What is a leaking aortic valve?

A leaking aortic valve means that when your hears pumps blood through the valve, that the valve does not close of properly when it should. This causes your heart to have to work harder because some of the blood it pumps leaks back into the heart and needs to be pumped out again.

What is a leaky valve that allows backflow of blood?

An incompetent valve allows backflow of blood.

In humans what results when a valve is leaking blood backwards in the heart?

not very much as it turns out. Many people have murmurs as these are commonly called. This is where the valve regurgitates blood through the leaking valve back into the chamber or vessel it came from. A third of the population have one or multiple murmurs. It only gets dangerous when the leaking becomes severe, this can be calculated only by an echocardiogram. If it becomes severe, Dr.s may intervene and either bolster the valve with a ring or replace the valve altogether with bovine, porcine or mechanical valves.

What is the function of the aortic valve?

The aortic valve functions as a one-way valve between the heart and the rest of the body. Blood is pumped from the left ventricle of the heart, through the valve, and down the aorta, which in turn supplies blood to all of the organs in the body. Between heart contractions, the valve closes, preventing blood from flowing backwards into the heart. The function of the aortic valve is then twofold: (1) It provides a route for which blood can leave the heart, and (2) It prevents blood that has already left the heart from leaking backwards into the heart.

What is the valve that is known as the mitral valve or left valve?

It is the valve between the top and bottom chambers of the left side of the heart. It stops blood leaking backwards, and allows it to go forward to the body where it is needed. See related link below for more information.
