An artificial heart valve is needed if your natural valve is leaking beyond a point that is causing the chambers (ventricles) to enlarge thus reducing blood flow through the lungs and creating increased pulmonary pressure. With a new valve the back pressure is eliminated and the heart becomes a much more effective pump.
