The act itself does hold potential risks as the vessels sail into the most hostile parts of the Antarctic ocean. As well, there is the risks of people getting injured during the hunts, especially when other organisations like Sea Shepherd and the close maneuvers could lead to collisions which in those waters can be fatal. As well, there is the obvious danger to whales as whaling causes physical and emotional harm not only to the whale that is being killed but to the rest of the pod, this is what makes it easy sometimes for the Japanese to kill whales.

Not all whaling is Japanese whaling. They get the most fame because they kill many whale (almost 1000 in the southern ocean every year, along with hundreds off their coast). Norway, Iceland, and some aboriginal tribes also kill whales, but not as many as Japan.
