We need to store all the data generated in experiments in a central place so all the scientists in the world can look at it and use it. The storage has to be logical, so people can search for different sets of information; databases are ideal for this. See this site for an example of collaberation between many international scientists - http://www.ensembl.org/index.html We have lots of data on DNA sequences but we don't know what they all mean yet, having this central database means we don't have to get all the sequences ourselves and speeds research.
